Private Charles Brooks, Royal Marine Light infantry, HMS Tenedos served in the naval brigade during the Zulu War. He served at Fort Tenedos on the Zulu side of the Tugela River across from Fort Pearson from January to the end of March. He then served with Lord Chelmsford’s Eshowe Relief force and was present at the Battle of Gingindlovu. He was ashore from 1 Jan 1879 to 13 May 1879. Entitled to the South Africa Medal with clasp “1879’.

His medal was delivered to him in November 1881 while he was still serving on Tenedos in the North America and West Indies Station. According to the 1881 census he was approximately 23 years old in 1881, and was born in Southampton, Hampshire.

The only Charles Brooks in the Royal Marine in the Archives online files was born on 1 January 1859, which meant he went ashore in Natal on his birthday. The spelling of his last name “Brooks” is confirmed on the medal roll and the 1881 census.
