| Shepherd was attending to George MacLeroy of the Natal Carbineer's just before his own death, Andrew Muirhead stated that Shepherd was killed by a thrown assegai soon after. I don't think you will find anything more from Muirhead. |

| Hi Littlehand . This from ' Zulu Rising ' by Ian Knight . Page 430 ..... Surgeon Shepherd must have recognized that tending to the wounded in the camp was hopeless , for Trpr Muirhead saw him just beyond the big gully . Muirehead had set off with a friend , Trpr George Macleroy , known to his fellow Carbineers as ' Kelly ' when .......... '' Kelly staggered in the saddle , evidently hit with an assegai . I stopped my horse to see what was the matter , and tried to support him , but could not , and had to lift him off onto the ground . At that moment Dr. Shepherd came galloping past . I called out to him , and he dismounted to examine Poor Kelly . After carefully examining him he said , '' Ah , the poor fellow !, too late, too late ! '' . I had just mounted my horse and Dr. Shepherd was in the act of putting his foot into the stirrup , when he was struck fatally with an assegai '' cheers 90th. |

| Contrary to Gary’s reference above taken from Zulu Rising Trooper George MacLeroy’s nickname was Geordie, rather than ‘Kelly’. Personally, I believe the use ‘Kelly’ is a perpetuated typographical error, a conclusion which the descendant family agree on.

| While I was shooting the other day Royston marched with nine men to Rorke’s Drift and on the following morning crossed over to Isandlwana with two companies of 24th and a large force of native allies to bury the dead. George Macleroy’s remains were found by an artillery man of the No 5 battery, who, as he was escaping, saw him fall. Trooper J, Symons Natal Carbineers |
