Hi All

In 1850 a certain Daniel Burton Scott immigrated from Caister Castle, Norfolk, England to Natal where he settled eventually in Pietermaritzburg, later to being elected as Mayor of the City. Three of his sons were to serve in the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 as members of of the Natal Carbineers, these being:

Frederick John Durrant,
Lieutenant in the Corps, born 19 April 1851 in Pietermaritzburg, one of the founding members of the Pietermaritzburg High School, before continuing his education from 1866 at Godolphin School, Hammersmith, London. Returned to Natal working as a clerk in a merchant's officer before becoming a partner in the company of Messers Mason and Scott. Joined the Carbineers in 1874, being promoted to Quartermaster and then 2nd lieutenant by 1878. Killed in action at Isandlwana 22 January 1879.

Daniel,
Sergeant-Major in the Corps, was out of camp with Chelmsford's force at the time of Isandlwana being previously in charge of the wagons of the invasion force. Later seconded to Newgate's column for the second invasion as Conductor od Wagons.

Clifford Walmsey Barlee,
Trumpeter to the Corps, born 31 January in Pietermaritzburg. Educated at Hermannsburg School and Malvern college, England. Qualified as an |Attorney in 1886, practicing in Greytown. Spent 10 years as a Councillor in Pietermaritzburg, serving on a number of various local committees.
