Lieut. H. G. Bird, R.N. H.M.S. “Tenedos

Harold Godfrey Bird joined the Navy in December 1864 as a Naval Cadet, and was promoted Midshipman in April 1867, Sub-Lieutenant in January 1872, and Lieutenant in April 1876. He is shown on the medal roll as Lieutenant of Tenedos during the Zulu war of 1879. He is listed in the Navy List of October 1879, but is absent from the Navy List of January 1880. He appears to have died in 1883. See Lots 425 and 1055 for related family medals.

11 Dec 1880 Placed on the Retired List.

Apr 1881 He is listed as a ‘patient’ at Royal Naval Hospital, Yarmouth

Oct 1881 His medal for the Zulu War was sent to his brother, Captain F.V.G. Bird, RMLI. A notation on the medal roll shows Lieutenant Bird was ‘Insane’.

18 Mar 1883 Died, age 31, at Royal Naval Hospital, Yarmouth

Note: Captain Frederick Vincent Godfrey Bird, RMLI was part of the Marine Battalion sent to South Africa, arriving at Simon’s Bay in June
1879, too late to participate in the Zulu War.
