I've just obtained a fantastic book called The Shaw Memorial: A Celebration Of An American Masterpiece, which is solely about how it was designed and made - Robert Gould Shaw was the commander of the 54th Regt. of coloured infantry, who died in action during the American Civil War. I'm unable to post a picture here, but maybe someone else could to show what a similar memorial idea to Col. D. and his native units would appear.

Hi Colinj. I think Mathew Broderick starred as R. Shaw in the movie ' Glory ' which I think was based on that 54th Regt , and I thought it was a good movie . . cheers 90th. .

That's correct. I have the dvd. Shaw was the officer put in charge of training and commanding the 54th. He died along with many of these men attacking a Confederate fort. He was buried in a mass grave with them.
