"Corporal (Pioneer) Henry Richardson, one of 15 corporals of the 416 men of the 1/24th Foot killed at Isandhlwana on 22nd January 1879, had had a chequered military career. Promoted to Corporal in December 1871 he was reduced to Private in July 1873. He re-joined the Regiment "from desertion" in February 1877 and had regained the rank of Corporal within a month. After Isandhlwana, a published statement by a survivor, one Private J Bickley, shows that Richardson had found a horse to flee the slaughter, but fell and, because of wounds in his arm, he was unable to re-mount and was last seen lying on the ground."

We wouldn't know where this took place. Might even had been along the trail.

Wallis & Wallis that was it. 90th if you see these during your browsing sessions, take the information, because once they sell, they could be gone forever, and at least we will have some information on the individual in-question, if they have copy-right status just post the link.

DB14. I will dig it out. Its was debated in the house of commons. Can't remember of hand who made the statement, but he was convinced that if spades had been available the day would have been saved.

Hi DB.
From Ian Castle's ' Zulu War - Volunteers , Irregulars & Auxiiiaries ' p 46 .
The Natal Pioneers were the only infantry elelment of the NNC to receive uniform at the outset of the war . This comprised the early
pattern British Infantry five button serge ' Frock ' but with the collar removed , white knee length canvas trousers , and a blue pill-box
forage cap with a yellow brow band . African pioneer NCO'S received firearms while the rest of the men were allocated tools - pickaxe , shovel , axe or crowbar .

There is more but can't fine it at the moment.

SIR BALDWYN LEIGHTON asked the Secretary of State for "War, Whether any of the regiments lately despatched to South Africa were furnished with portable intrenching tools; and, if not, whether her Majesty's Government think it desirable that any delay should occur in providing such equipment; and, whether Her Majesty's Government are aware that the Roumanian Army at the Siege of Plevna, and the Austrian Army in the disputed occupation of the Turkish Provinces, found such equipment of signal service?

COLONEL LOYD-LINDSAY, in reply, said, our Infantry and Cavalry were always furnished with the ordinary equipment, which comprised intrenching tools, spades, and pickaxes; and, in addition to these, the regiments lately despatched to South Africa had 2,000 or 3,000 spades and pickaxes of a light character. Our attachés had furnished full information upon the use made of this equipment at Plevna and by the Austrian Army of Occupation, and a careful report was being made by the military authorities. It was obvious that while intrenching tools might be useful to enable men to protect themselves against a distant fire, they would have been of no avail as against a sudden rush like that at Isandula.

SUPPLY—ARMY ESTIMATES.Sir Henry Havelock Commons — March 3, 1879
- to the regiments that had just gone out to the Cape. If the men at Isandula had had these light spades, they would have been able, even in a few hours, to have intrenched the camp, or, at any rate, to have thrown up
