Hi All . An interesting pattern ? . Of the 8 major zulu battles 5 were fought or started on a Wednesday , Inyezane , Isandlwana , R.Drift , Intombe River , Gingindlovu ! . For those who may be interested 2 others were on a Friday Hlobane & Ulundi and the other, Kambula was on a Saturday . I'm thinking the Piquets should have been doubled on Wednesdays !. . cheers 90th

Hi Pascal . I'm only counting the 8 major battles , I havent included Sihayo's Kraal as it was more a skirmish than a battle . cheers 90th.

I'll check, but I think that there was no more fighters on the Intombi Drift that during the attack on Sihayo Kraal ...
And At what number of men, a battle is a battle?
This weekend I will give you precise numbers during the attack on Sihayo Kraal and my sources ...
Cheers

Hi Pascal. From memory the British and Colonials may have lost 1 person at Sihayo's Kraal and maybe about 30 zulus were killed . At Intombe the British lost 77 men , of that 62 were from the 80th Regt . As you can see it was more a skirmish at Sihayo's as most of the men had left the Kraal . The majority of the British force that attacked Sihayo were the NNC , that is why I call it a skirmish and not a battle . The simple reason is the British imperial force wasnt used as the main attacking force and Chelmesford also wished to see what the performance of the NNC would be in an attacking roll . Hope you understand what I'm trying to say ?. cheers 90th.

I think there was more fighting in this skirmish on Intombi Drift ...
This is not the number of men that makes the difference between a skirmish and a battle?

Hi 90th
That's what I thought, this battle has the numbers are more impressive than the Intombi Drift with:
all the 3 rd Infantry Regiment of the NNC (the second battalion in reserve) or 2256 men...
4 Companies of the 1st Battalion the 24th, about 320 men...
All the police around 88 men...
And all the Natal mounted volunteers:
the Natal mounted Carbineers with 60 men...
the Buffalo Border Guards with 20 men ...
the Newcastle mounted Rifles with 32 men...
+ a detachment of the 2nd Battalion, 24th, number unknown, but 2 or 3 companies ...
A total of about 3,000 men to face about 300 Zulu!
Then saw the numbers, it's not a battle that? With three times as many fighters as the Intombi...
Look "Black Soldiers of the Queen" by P.S. Thompson and "Historical Records of the 24 th Regiment,from its formation,in 1689"by George Patton,Farquhar Glennie;
