Hello I read long ago in "then and now, the Zulu war" a son of Sihayo ,officer in the Zulu regiment iNgobamakhosi , had said he had counted 50 shots of 7pdrs RML guns at Isandhlwana, this is he said?
The survivors of the section of artillery have indicated how many shots they had made and for how long?

Q: "How many cannon shots were fired.?
A: The cannons fired four missle at the iNgobamakhosi and then they turned to fire at the uMbonambi. I don't know how many shots they fired, they fired very quickly, not at one, but at all three regiments. they must have fired about 10-20 times. They started firing when we were a long way off and hadn't yet reached the camp, that is willow bridge to the court house and we had to advance all that distance to the camp."

Hi John & DB 14
After the Captain J.S.Rothwell,R.A " The two guns of N/5 R.A., with their detachments turned out along with the other troops at 12 o'clok, and came into action on the left of the camp, and about 400 yards from it."
At 1.10pm,After the Captain J.S.Rothwell,R.A " The two guns ,after discharging a few rounds of case in the dense advancing mass of the enemy, limbered up and retired toward the camp ."
Conclusion = 70 minute of fire per gun at two shot per minute per gun = 138 shrapnel (21 balls of lead and antimony per 7- pr.Shrapnel...) + 2 case shot (70 balls of lead and antimony per 7- pr.Case Shot... ) = 140 shot per gun.
My calculation is correct ?
Cheers
