Hi All,
I moved this to a different thread as I am progressing with it and as I previously said I would keep you up to date with progress.

Today I have painted and completed the base work terrain, put a base coat on the horse and oiled the base with Danish oil.

cheers

Looks great so farRichie. Really looking forward to seeing the finished product. How much longer do you think it'll take? Also, is that a MH or a carbine in his saddle holster?

Hi Tasker & 90th,
Thanks for looking, Tasker I can certainly answer your second question - it is a carbine. When I get 5 mins tomorrow I will post the carbine on this thread as well as the Martini Henry. They were built my a mate of mine especially for me and are now available to buy. The detail is superb on his weapons and I know for his 1/16 scale Martini Henry he took the measurements from an actual weapon then scaled it down. He then did the same for the carbine.
As for finishing the figure I want it ready for a model show in April so I can exhibit it in the model competition. (This will be my first time) It largely depends on work, family and how long it will take the oil paints to dry on the horse. The figure will be painted in acrylics and these dry in minutes.

90th thanks for all the support it makes a real difference to the motivation.
Thanks again lads
cheers

Hi All,
As promised the photo's of the 1/16 scale model weapons Martini Henry & Carbine. The are available from his website Reedees Miniatures Limited contact info reedeesminiatures@hotmail.co.uk

They would make a great piece painted and mounted on their own. The quality of product and service is first class, with minimal clean up required why not check them out.

Richie

for 100% accuracy you need to remove the sling swivels the IC1 cavalry carbine did not have them, This is what it should look like
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Lancers were the first regiment to be issued with the IC1 carbine and see service in the AZW, albeit from March, first recorded issue was the 9th Lancers in Afghanistan Nov 1878.

Hi 90th,
Thanks for looking in, I must admit his weapons are suberb he makes all sorts of periods, types and scales and for the money they cost super value.

Hi Neil,
Thanks for the correction, I actually did remove them for my Lancer figure so it would fit in the pouch. If I remember correctly to save time my mate converted the Martini Henry in order to knock me out a batch of carbines quickly. I will let him know.

Neil just for future reference is this applicable to all carbines - no sling swivels??? Might sound a daft question but I am certainly no expert and would value your input.

cheers

The detail is going to be amazing Richie, keep up the good work.
Can't wait to see the finished model.
Not to pre-empt Neil, as he is the expert, but I am imagining that it is just the cavalry weapons that didn't need the sling swivels.

Bonsoir Richie

No sling swivels for the carabines because, after 1862 the carbines are in a 2ft.1in.leather bucket to hang from the saddle behind the right legs

And from 1878 an additional ten -round expense pouch for attachment to the lancer's girdle was authorised

Hi Takser,
Thanks for dropping in, I just hope I can maintain the level and accuracy.

Hi Pascal,
Thanks for the information on the carbines very much appreciated. I want to make some standing figures in the future with carbines I know now I will not make a mistake by adding slings.

Best check with Neil Aspinshaw Richie, I would PM him if I were you. It could be that infantry weapons had the slings so the soldier could carry it. Obviously, the cavalrymen let the horse do the hard work.

Richie

The IC1 Artillery Carbine became standard issue in LOC 3615 21.7.1879, with the following comments "this carbine is fitted with swivels for a sling".

The other notable differences is the nosecap, elongated for the bayonet, also the rod had a hollow end, the Cavalry carbine had a domed end to ensure it slid into the saddle bucket. Like wise the receiver had the edges softened to allow the former and the sight tip wings to protect it.

Here is a study of an IC1 from my collection, c/w its saddle bucket, The P79 sawback bayonet is for the Artillery Carbine.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As I mentioned earlier, It was only in March that the IC1 made its entrance into Zululand, Enfield has difficulty converting its works to accept the IC1, production until Nov 1878 was only 30,000 with priority going to those regiments in Afghanistan.

The IC1 Artillery in my Collection is dated 1877, but this is not the issue date, the IC1 is "Carbine Interchangeable Mk1" testimony to the fact Enfield could change barrels and actions to the new pattern on demand.

Hi Richie

I am confident that Michael Barthorp for the British Army and Barry and Julian for the Zulu army, it helped me a lot the last two for making my 40-50 Zulu warriors of the inDluyengwe regiment , otherwise I would do a lot of crap, that makes you a lot of figures in 1 / 56 th or the details are still visible, you can not allow you to do stupid things because they take weeks to repair ...

Cheers

Hi Barry,

As soon as I finished my warriors inDluyengwe , I make Durnford with the NMC and the NMP troopers Who Were With Him When He died at Isandhlwana ...

In April I could put my inDluyengwe on the forum and in July, Durnford and the NMP and NMC troopers ...,

It is a long-term job ...

Hi All,
A small update to the project, I have started to paint the horse in oils. I have laid down a couple of coats and started to blend the highlights and shadows for some depth. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks the way things are going I can have the horse completed.

Hi All,
Apologies for not being active but I have bust a rib and this has kept me out of action for a couple of weeks and I am just starting to get back to it now the pain killers are kicking in.

In the meantime I have had a laser cut plaque made although only tacked on for the moment. I have completed some more work on the horse and the saddle. The Lancer has had the main uniform colours blocked in and I have stated to paint the sword and pouches. Still loads to do but things are moving again at last.
Hope all is well with everyone.

cheers
Richie

Yes he will, if you look at some of the previous photo's further up the post you can see this, I have just removed it whilst I was painting the horse and saddle.

This is brilliant, great work.

Hope you are feeling a lot better after busting a rib, that must have been sore.

Wait until 1879graves sees this, he will be after getting one from you.

Get well soon mate.

Hi tasker224, Mr Greaves, 90th, Martin and Pascal,

Thank you all for your kind comments I feel truly humbled. This piece is definitely a labour of love and I thank you all for your continued interest which really helps motivate me. I, like you all have a real fondness for this period and though I am not as knowledgable or well read as you, I hope my enthusiasm is conveyed in my models.
Hope to have another productive weekend and will post my progress.
The rib by the way is on the mend slowly - so I will just have to beat the wife to the postman so I don't have a re-lapse in the rib department!!! Wink
cheers

Hi Richie .
As I intimated earlier , if by chance you decide to market these wonderful figures , you will make plenty of cash , then you will certainly need to beat the wife to the postman as I imagine a cheque or something similar will be attacked with more gusto !.
Hope the rib is coming along well , they can be painful as you are well aware !. Suspect . I also realise it isnt ( Cash ) which motivates you to do , what you so brilliantly do !. Salute All the best mate .
cheers 90th. Shocked

Hi all

Richie, you're very lucky to work on one figure at a time and as large ...

I'm still stuck on my series of 50 Zulu and it does not advance ... Sad

Hello the :joker:

When I'm on the forum, it is waiting for paint dryer
or preparing the "Green stuff" ...

For example, it took me a month to make 10 Swazis of Wood ...

I would like to see you there to sculpt 50 figures in this scale there, it changes the 20mm of my Free French

Hi All,
Just finished a little bit more work on the Lancer. I have painted the pouches, water bottle, sword, horse shoe pouch and got a base coat on the carbine and boot. I have freshened up the white straps ready for the detailing, tidied up braiding and done some work on the uniform.
cheers

Dedicate it the regimental museum. They would be honoured to have it on. Display. Salute
