Does anyone know were the button that was taken from Durnfords coat on the 21st of May is ?
Statement of trooper Beverly Natal Carbineers. The body of the late Colonel Durnford and placed in canvas, and covered over with a few large stones and placed in a large Donga. It was in the uniform of a coat from which i distincly remember a button being torn by someone who was present with me. In my mind there is no dout on this point, it was from the coat the button was taken.

DB. It maybe me reading it wrong. But it's doesn't make sense. Maybe someone can put it into laymans terms.

Hi Littlehand . I think it's just 1879 ' Speak ', the way they used to talk in letters or papers etc etc from that era , they didnt construct sentences like we do today . Tasker . Why not ? . I dont see anything sinister , he's merely saying what he saw . Which is a good thing isnt it ? , as people will be trying to gather more info on this occurance . :lol: . cheers 90th.

If Durnfords body had a coat on as has been stated then Captain Shepstone was lying at the court of inquiry.
Mr Brewer Certainly the body had a coat on, he himself had taken a button from it as a memorial, he believed he still had it, and would willingly give it to colonel Hawthorn if the latter wished.

Was Beverley trying to discretely report "someone" without initially naming hi, perhaps believing he would be questioned regarding this remark on a later occasion.? Did he not name the button taker as he was a higher rank to he? The fact that he mentions it in his report at all, implies that he thought it worth mentionoing, so was significant in some way. If it was the norm to remove souvenirs back then, why mention it? By implication, it was unusual, as he bothers to mention it, but mysteriously, just refers to the button taker as "someone" he was "with." Today anyone taking anything off a dead body like this would receive a swift smack round the chops

All was from the court of inquiry into Captain Shepstone. They were asked if the body had a coat on, as Shepstone said it didn't.
