"John Charles Cole enlisted for the Somerset regiment 20 March 1874. Fully verified on roll WO.100/46 for medal and clasp which clearly shows he was one of those elected to support the engagement against Sekukuni during the Sekukune campaign in 1878, and against the Zulus in 1879 and Moirosi’s styronghold (Medal and clasp). He only served in the regiment 5 years 8 months having purchased his own discharge 17 Nov. 1879. He was later shown as serving with the 1st Cape A.R when he received his medal during 1881. He appears to have died on 26 Jan. 1924."
A little more research would not go amiss! With relative page entry from the roll.
