"Thomas Holland was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 19th Foot at Bradford on 8 November 1864 aged 19 years. He transferred to the 1st Battalion 24th Foot on 21 February 1879 and served with them in South Africa, 1 March-2 October 1879. He then returned to service with the 19th Foot.
