"John Dunn was born at Dorchester and enlisted in the 17th Lancers at Dublin in February 1868, aged 14 years. Five years later he was appointed a Trumpeter and by the eve of the Zulu War operations he had attained the rank of Trumpet-Major - he was present in South Africa from February to October 1879. Dunn transferred to the 21st Hussars as Bandmaster in December 1883 and served out in India from 1887-90 before returning home to obtain his discharge in March of the latter year."
