"Major Edward Vanrenen was commissioned as an Ensign into the Cape Mounted Riflemen on 20 December 1859; transferred to the 34th Foot, with the rank of Lieutenant 17 March 1869; Captain, 20 January 1877; transferred to the 109th Foot, 31 October 1877; Major 12 January 1881; retired with the honorary rank of Major, 12 January 1881. He was the only member of the regiment to receive the South Africa Medal"
