Hi Db15,

One of the Zulu account's I think Mehlogozulu's , recounts Durnford, in the last stand, swinging his sword at his attackers with gusto and the blade flashing in the afternoon sun.
So, ....... if that is correct, the sword could not have been in his wagon ?. Besides which, all the wagons were looted.

Mehlogozulu also mentioned regarding Durnford that he would try and get the sabra back. But have seen nothing since to say it was return.

Hello and thank you to all three

Oh, what misery, even with the primary sources we are sure of nothing ...

So for more important issues, you can imagine the errors made by historians and peddled for 133 years !

There was a statement, possibly by Davies that he saw Durnford on/near the firing line with his servant alongside who was carrying the sword.

I'm assuming that CTSG suggested that because the Zulu inquestion was discussing Durnford when it was mentioned.

Durnford used his knife to clear the carbines of his men when they jammed, so he was carrying one of those.

His dagger is sometimes represented on the back of his left hip in his cases ... It is that?

Durnford descibes his apperence in a letter to his family as this

"Boots, Spurs dark cord breaches, serge patrol jacket, broad beltover the shoulders and one round
the waist, to the former attached a revolver and to the latter a hunting knife and ammuntion pouch. A
wide-awake soft felt hat with wide brim, one side turned up and a crimson turnban wound around the hat."

His pocket knife was in his mess jacket pocket, out of sight.

Ok where's the Dagger. If your referring to his hunting knife. It's a totally different weapon all together.

So he had his mess jacket on at Isandlwana.
