Members are bound to hear sooner or later, but I regret to advise that the Prince Imperial's memorial on the Tshotshosi River has been completely destroyed by idiots who believed there were remains buried there and were probably hoping to use them for muthi. The relevant authorities have been alerted but the memorial will need to be completely rebuilt.

There's not much one can say, without using words of an un-censored nature. So idiots will do for now. Ken if you can, can you find out what the cost will be to restore the memorial.

This news is terrible, it just goes to show that in todays "modern society" people have no respect whatsoever. This desecration is deplorable, and I hope that the authorities catch up with these mindless morons and punish them accordingly, these sort of idiots are totally disgusting, and deserve all the punishment that the law can throw at them.

Has it been covered in the press ? , maybe a reward will lead to the capture of these non respectful imbiciles ! , I'm sure with a cash inducement the truth will be found ! . Has anyone photographed the damage ??.

In addition during my recent visit to isandlwana I found that one of the more remote cairns on the rocky ridge had been hollowed out from the bottom, it was reported.
The gates to the Volunteers memorial on the side of the koppie have also been stolen.

Hi Ken,

The destruction of the Prince Imperial memorial at the Ityoyosi river is bad news. This type of problem is endemic in Natal and I had heard a few weeks ago that the same had happened at Fort Napier where some of my ancestors are interred. Determined to check the damage I called in there about a month ago and found that the metal thieves had been nabbed in time and under the guidance of Steve Watts, restoration was complete and the site was immaculate.

String em up by their Goolies, over an open fire, after 3 hours give them a hot salt & VInegar Bath. Then tie their arms and legs to four horse's and set them of running. The proceeds from the entertainment would pay for the restoration of the memorial. Job done... Salute

It appears it was just the Princes Memorial. The cross as you see in the photo was broken in half. As luck as it, it was just a replica and not the original. Salute

A suggestion has been made that a reward is offered leading to the arrest of those responsible. The SAMHS KZN Branch will discuss this at our monthly meeting tomorrow night. We have been offered a repository for money collected to restore the memorial or for a reward if agreed to. I'll advise members of the Forum as soon as possible.

It is a lack of respect thing. Unbelievable. I'm not a violent man so don't concur with some of the suggestions on here, but many parents these days have no interest in bringing up their offspring - this is where the problem stems.

Personally I am highly susceptible and can become extremely violent in no time, but the graves are sacred and I never touch a grave, even that of a German soldier, for example ...

Thank you gods, it seems that in France, the graves of Allied soldiers from both world wars never be desecrated, except those of Muslim or Jewish soldiers of the French army, this because there, in all countries of continental Europe, because of the economic crisis, a terrible rise of nationalism and thus racism and antisemitism ...

Amafa / Heritage KwaZulu-Natal have indicated that they would appreciate such a gesture and any excess may go towards a reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the desecration of the monument. There really ought to be one recognised and easy to contribute to, charitable trust for this kind of thing, run by the SA government, heritage people or veterans.
For example, we have the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, CWGC, but I am not sure if they would be able to help with this one.

Why not contact the embassy of France in South Africa asking for financial assistance, as it is to restore a monument to a French ...

Forum members resident in South Africa could do that easily ...

They have nothing to lose in case of failure.
