Firstly: None of these patients above, are war wounded of the January 12, 1879 battle, they are all sick.

Secondly :On the January 12, 1879... After taking the village of Sihayo, the third column is left with 10 Zulu prisoners intact and 4 zulu wounded and also prisoners .also except the 25B/295 Private David Jenkins ,who escorted the prisoners on the list above, where and when?, those who were not sick were part of the escort ?

Thirdly : You know the total number of men of this escort ,except the 25B/295 Private David Jenkins of which units, these men were and And what is their date of arrival at destination?

Fourthly : I do not understand that the 25B/295 Private David Jenkins remained in RD that has no sense!

It is not whether or not if the 25B/295 Private David Jenkins was or not at RD , that interested me but it's the 1/24 th in the battle of RD and the "why" of the comings and goings of some men of this brave battalion between Zululand and Natal between 12 January 1879 and 22 January 1879...

Pascal, it makes sense to merge this with the Pte Jenkins topic, as you mention him in points 2 3 & 4 and it seems relevant to the discussion in hand.

Old Julian's taking his time with his publication.   I guess it must be a struggle looking for something that doesn't exist.  

It does not take time to look for something that does not exist, it's in the bag (from the beginning) and you will see that the end of August or early September  

I'm hoping Impi is incorrect when he says, it will be information we have seen or already know about, but re-worded. And not just a load of what if's.

I'm fairly confident that Julian wouldn't say something he could do if he couldn't. It wouldn't do his reputation as an Historian any good. I just hope its not just about those old ledgers in the museum.

Well done, pretty close to the truth. Julian has a much wider audience than this forum ( sorry Pete no offence intended ). And his research is done as a profesion, not as an emotive issue.
One things for sure he does not take chances such as a number of other researchers/authors are known to do. His research is pretty solid and if a mistake occurs he is the first to acknowledge.

Lets wait and see shall we.

wonder, how many of his armchair critics
have actually produced ANYTHING to further
our better understanding of this fascinating
chapter of british history..no axe to grind..

Hero of Rorke's Drift

Sergeant Henry Hook VC, formerly of the South Wales Borderers, died at Gloucester on Sunday, age 54. Deceased, who won his Victoria Cross in the Defence of Rorke's Drift, was attendant at the British Museum for twenty years, and recently retired owing to ill health, his Victoria Cross pension of £10 being increased to £50 by the War Office.
The cause of death was consumption. He leaves a widow and two little daughters.
SWANSEA VETERAN RECALLS HIM.
Mr David Jenkins, who is employed at the Swansea Corporation Yard, is a survivor of the historic Rorke's Drift fight, and to him a 'Post' man repaired on Monday.
"Oh, yes," responded the ex-24th hero; "I remember Hook well; but he was not in my battalion. I was in the 1st, and he was a private in the 'B' Company of the second 24th. I recollect now," continued the veteran, reflectively, "that he was on the roof doing his bit towards keeping off the Zulus. We had, as you know, 27 out of 128 killed, but accounted for over 800 of the enemy. No, he wasn't wounded; but he got his VC all right, and well he deserved it. A quiet fellow, but a good fighter. But, there, we all had to fight."

Was "Hook" on the roof at one point? I thought he was inside the hospital and from there to the wall. And " Hook" was wounded forehead wound!

"Ex-Private Jenkins, of Swansea, one of the heroic defenders of Rorke's Drift, and who it will be remembered sat for Lady Butler's famous picture of that title, has received the following letter from Lady Butler, Government House, Devonport, July 15th, 1900.-
'Sir-, In answer to your enquiry I write to say that my picture of 'Rorke's Drift' has never been engraved, otherwise I would long ago have had the pleasure of sending you an artist's proof in recognition of the great pains you took with the sittings you gave me for that picture. Hoping you are well, I remain, yours very truly, Elizabeth Butler.'
Ex-Private Jenkins is at present employed as storekeeper by the Swansea Corporation."

Sherman. The letter is merely pointing that Jenkins sat for Lady Bulers painting. Most of the RD defenders were overseas and it's well known that other soldiers who DID NOT take part in the defence stood in. You could say to complete the picture!
