"COLONEL JOHN MATHEW JONES, Army Medical Staff (retired), died at Bryn Tyrion, Chlurclh Walks, Llandudiio, on August 30th. He was born on January 2nd, 1853, educated at University College, London, at Liverpool,and at Edinburgh University, and took the diploma
of L.l.C.P.Ed. in 1876, and tllat of L.R.C.S.Ed. in 1878. Entering the army as surgeon on Marclh 6tlh, 1880, he became surgeon-major on March 6tlh, 1892, lieutenant colonel on March 6tll, 1900, and attained the rank of full colonel on September 18tlh, 1907, retiring on January 2nd, 1910. Before entering tlle army lhe served as a civil surgeon in Soutlh Africa, in the Zulu campaign of 1879, receiving the nmedal and clasp, but lhe appears to have seen no war service during his thirty years in the armny. When the war broke out he rejoined for duty, and was employed as A.D.M.S. at Plymouth till invalided on account of ill health".
