Thanks Ray, I had seen that.
I looking at the period after the Indian Mutiny up until the mid-1860's, to establish whether he was on the Staff of a local Brigadier.

No it jumps from Indian Mutiny with his regiment, the 54th, to being an aide-de-camp with Thesiger in the 9th Cape Frontier War.
Kenny has sent me something he discovered in The London Gazette, which I think holds the answer, but requires further research.
