| Looking at the background behind the horses, that's either a very flat field with an inlet behind or a river/body of water. I cant place it in the isandlwana context.?

"Sir Garnet Wolseley to the War Office, on the subject, including a report from Major Bromhead, which stated that in September last year he encamped at Isandula with two companies of the 2-24th Regiment. The battle-field was thoroughly cleaned, and all debris removed and buried or burned. The remains still unburied were decently interred, as well as such as were found only partly covered. Being unable to obtain the necessary information to identify individual graves, Major Bromhead caused three cairns to be erected at points where the largest number had been buried, and sixteen young eucalyptus trees were planted in a circle round the lower cairn." |

| Hi All, Concur, the picture of the two NC troopers in front of their patrol tent was not taken at Isandlwana. The background flora is silver leaf (Cape Silver oak: Brachylaena discolour) and mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza), two tree types not not found in the hinterland and at higher elevations, and their presence in the shot, as well as a shore in the background is strongly indicative of a warm camp at the coast, probably on the south coast of Natal in the Port Shepston area, on a coastal estuary. It was there that many annual camps were held for all the Natal Volunteers, ie NFA, NC, NP, DLI, NMR, UMR et al, and was much part of the Colonial military scene in Natal. The MH's present date the picture to pre-turn of century.

| Hi Springbok9, Did you notice that the two kerels in the photo were adding "stiffening" to their early morning coffee?. Life is tough you know, because the mosquitos will drive you nuts ,at the annual summer camp at the beach.
regards,
