| Some time ago whilst going through the attestation papers for Thorneycrofts Mounted Infantry in the Boer War I can across this chap:

| Hello,
Are there likely to be any Court Martial or Crown/Magistrates Court papers relating to the attack on Thomas Lockardt? I am only asking because court papers often have character references and statements from officers. There may be more information about Thomas and his military career contained in those papers. |

| Just realised that there won't be any court papers....under Question 4 on the discharge paper it states something along the lines of, Rough contact with service,..... 'of some members who remain unknown'.
Thomas suffered a fractured skull and the Surgeon describes it as 'rough contact'...with a fracture and a displacement of certain other bones.
It was probably looked upon on as boyish horseplay. |

| Hi 90th
Q3 This a aftermath condition of Epilepsy induced by an injury to the head incurred at the hands of soldiers of the Colchester Garrison who waylaid and maliciously ill-treated him without provocation and notice causing a fracture of the orbit and displacement of certain other bones.
Q4 Having problems with this one myself 90th.
Hi Waterloo50
I have a ref to the following with regards to the above. "The Court of inquiry found the injury had taken place when absent when not on duty - he had broken out of barracks." (Regimental Journal, 1938) |

| Question 4 reads.
"It cannot be said to have been caused by Military Service though contracted in the Service and at the hands of some of its members who remain unknown."
