Can anyone point me at all in the direction of anything that would give me details of Francis Broadfoot Russell's wife: marriage date, name, kids, what happened to her after 1879, and so on? I've reached a dead end.

Julian,
Here are a couple of newspaper articles that mention his children. I can email you the newspaper articles, if you like.
The Illustrated London News, April 5, 1879, in an article on Isandlwana, mentions the “Major Russell leaves a widow and three children.”
The Daily Express, Dublin, March 13, 1888 lists the death of one of his children. “Russell – March 11, Francis Cole Russell, eldest son of the late Major Francis Broadfoot Russell, Royal Artillery, aged 12.”

Kathleen Gertrude husband Howard B Mayne played cricket for Dublin Uni, was awarded for work during the Messina Earthquake in Italy and is listed on the Mariners Roll of Honour Christchurch DunLaoghaire Dublin and on the Chaplins board at St George's Church Chatham. After some more research Arthur P R Mayne is NOT the child of Kathleen and Howard Mayne.
