| I'm sat here talking to the wife, we both agree how sad this act is! she know's about Booth from me over the years.. and points out that she would be just as outraged if it was a paupers headstone or even a king's. it's been a growing trend for many years now for yob's to casually overturned headstones, without a thought for who lies beneath. there is no respect anymore from some people who have not been taught to respect the sanctity of dead. shame to them. |

| You will probably find that such people do not respect the living either - only thing that bothers them is the fact that the living may fight back......
Thankfully they are (I hope) a minority in society...... |

| Confederate statues in cities everywhere from the Civil War are being removed both lawfully and unlawfully around our country allegedly because they are not politically correct and celebrate racism. So are the 1400 or so schools that have names associated with same Civil War. Next will come the renaming of the thousands of streets that have the same such supposed flaw or offensive monicker.
I am no advocate of the above, but just for the sake of hypothesis, I wonder if celebratory historical markers of so called colonialism and imperialism that are in the UK will be one date be forced down, obliterated, or destroyed like our remnants of the past are here in the USA? |

| To be honest, the grave was in need of a bit of a spruce up. Not forgiving what they did, their actions have actually led to various organisations becoming involved to bring this monument back to something like it should have already been. |

| Isandula What you contemplate about the future in the UK has already started in South Africa. I suspect that once such movements start they may escalate, but I doubt that they can ever be reversed. Regards Brett |

| As far as statues go - I spose in history, one mans hero is another mans villain......history and public opinion is quick to decide, who are the 'goodies' and who are the 'baddies'.
As they say 'history is written by the winners' and statues are carved by them and over time opinion changes about the subject.
On this forum, our general opinion is the Bartle Frere wore the 'black hat' and Cetshwayo the 'white hat' but was the Zulu King so squeaky clean? We will probably never know because we cannot know his motives - everything is written pro or against him......
We like to think of everything being in black and white but nothing is.....everything and everyone is varying shades of grey.
However, I feel that the trashing of AWBs grave stone has no particular political motive, it was probably performed by a group of scrotes, with nothing better to do - a sociologist could argue that it is fault of society, that someone felt the urge to do it (I once did a sociology course at college....I managed it for 2 weeks before declaring.....)
Hopefully, as Roslier says something good will come of it.
