In response to the post “Memorial to men who died during the siege of Eshowe” I would like to make a few corrections to those of the Naval Brigade.
There were only 5 Naval Brigade deaths at Eshowe, but there are 6 names for HMS Active listed on this memorial,
Mannie, J. Mshpmn HMS Active – There was no one named J. Mannie serving with the Naval Brigade at Eshowe, and there was only one Midshipman serving with HMS Active ashore, not three. This was may have been a misreading of J. Moore.
Moore, J. A.B. HMS Active – J. Moore was a Shoemaker, not an Able Seaman
Stagg, W. A.B. HMS Active – W. Stagg was a Private in the RMLI, not an Able Seaman
Smith, A. A.B. HMS Active – Correct
Coker, L. Mshpmn HMS Active – Correct
Radford, H. Mshpmn HMS Active – E. Radford was a Leading Seaman, not a Midshipman
