| Andy,
Thanks for that. I wonder which officer Harry was batman to?
I see in Roy Dutton’s work that the author of the letter appears as ‘Sergeant 2978 Chester, H.’ who did receive the ‘79 bar.
The photograph did come with another 60th Rifles cdv taken in Cairo, sadly it was not identified. I just wonder if...

| Cheers Andy,
I’m trying to find a group photograph of the Sergeants of the 3rd/60th I have, in an effort to try a spot a family resemblance to Harry’s cdv.

| On the 60th muster rolls, Henry Chesher no 2978 col/sgt 3rd/60th enlisted 24 sept 1869 died 27 jan 1880, labourer from Halford, in 1871 he is at Bellary in india as a corporal. As Andy states above a H Chesher is a private during zulu war, 1 boer war, and egypt 82, in 3/60. It would seem to be two men with the same initials H, Henry the sgt dies in 1880, whereas H continues in the first boer war and 1882 egypt. 2978 is on the medal roll as chester and is a sgt, receives medal and 1879 clasp, 3467 is a private cheser on the medal roll receives a no clasp medal. rai keynshamlighthorse |
