| Crikey if I'd just done the old quick change over 4 week shift pattern I would have probably asked if it was Ivan the Terribles nephew. I will amend my post above accordingly. |

| A couple of stabs, one a bit left field.
1. Another Thesiger - there is a likeness.
2. Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari.

| Steve, Here’s an engraving of Sir Louis. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Sir Louis Cavagnari, perished at the Kabul Residency 3rd September 1879 John Young Collection. No he is not a Thesiger, prior to Frederic Augustus Thesiger joining the army the family were strongly connected to the Royal Navy. | I wondered about Lt Gen Charles Wemyss Thesiger his brother, but no sign of beard. I'd say it's trying to be a Crimea medal?

| One of my all time favourite maps is Stanford's Library Map of India published in 1857, the year of the mutiny. It comes in two halves and in total measures about 7 feet by 5 feet. It took me many years to find both halves! The detail is staggering, showing every Indian State and when it was acquired by the East India Company. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Look forward to the book John. Steve |

| Well done JY.. it's a treat to watch a fine mind in action.. it's the most entertaining book plug i have ever seen. my own book's on the mutiny are from the turn of the last century and later, it seem's such a long time ago that you first mentioned that your next book was about the company and the mutiny. fresh eye's and a new perspective. |

| Hi Kate
Now that's really odd. Looks pretty genuine but of course he had nothing to do with the AZW. Because its been mounted on card we do not know what it might have said inside, but I wonder if they just confused him with the Prince Imperial.

| No what is odd is where are the contents? It should contain Lowry-like battle scenes and personalty portraits in a concertina format start from one side you have the Zulu War, start from the other and you have the Afghan War.
I’ll dig some out after the rugby.

| Kate,
I know few of us have them. I got mine from German EBay several years back.
They are fairly delicate given the way they were put together.
I’ll do some more later.
Mrs Cetewayo is interesting...

| Frank, A bed of Roses trampled by the cloven hooves of the Springboks. I had to retire to bed early last night, to put pay the e-mails coming from KZN. Was that Gugu’s dance troupe invading the pitch prior to the anthems? Kate, Here’s Mr. & Mrs. Cetshwayo, it appears he was suffering from a severe case of malnutrition at the time. | John, part 2 this afternoon in the 7,s. Had to love the passion in the Zulu warm up. Did you notice the touch of irony in the music? Johny Clegg with "impi". The song is all about iSandlwana. War! O Here Comes War Who Here Can Touch The Lions? All Along The River Chelmsford's Army Lay Asleep Come To Crush The Children Of Mageba Come To Exact The Realm's Price For Peace And In The Morning As They Saddled Up To Ride Their Eyes Shone With The Fire And The Steel The General Told Them Of The Task That Lay Ahead To Bring The People Of The Sky To Heel War! O Here Comes War Who Here Can Touch The Lions?
Mud And Sweat On Polished Leather Warm Rain Seeping To The Bone They Rode Through The Season's Wet Weather Straining For A Glimpse Of The Foe Hopeless Battalion Destined To Die Broken By The Benders Of Kings Vainglorious General And Victorian Pride Would Cost Him And 800 Men Their Lives
Cheers
