Having made the post, I remembered that the 24th did get awarded the famous SPHINX with Egypt in 1801. For 1806, as far as I can tell there were no awards to individuals and then the battle honour was only granted in 1824. In 1881 when the honour for South Africa 1877-8-9 was granted, the date 1806 was added to the earlier award to avoid confusion. |

| Odd that the Military General Service Medal didn’t extend to the Cape of Good Hope, given that the clasp ‘Java’ was authorised for another action against the Dutch.
