There appears to be a consensus that the Natal Carbineer accompanying Adendorff away from Islandhlwana was a Trooper W Sibthorpe of the Natal Carbineers.
Is anyone able to point me towards any further information about him?

I'd direct you to the essay The Brave fugitive and p. 75 in particular in Studies in the Zulu War vol I.
Sibthorpe left no known account. Binns was the historian who stated definitively that it was S. and Adendorff who warned the Drift but without giving any provenance. As you will read a process of elimination would seen to suggest he was right. |

Thanks. I will look into these with interest. I note that the same name; this time a Private W Sibthorpe appears some years later at Lombards Kop in 1899 where a DCM was awarded alongside Lt.John Norwood's VC.
