"Colonel S. Graves organised for the Zulu war of 1879 the 2na Regiment of Natal Native Contingent, consisting of two battalions, and served with Pearson's Column, in command o£ the regiment, during the advance to Ekowe, taking part in the engagement of Inyezane (mentioned in despatches as having been indefatigable in his exertions, (Medal with Clasp)."

Major Shapland Graves 2/ NNC was from the 2/ 3rd Btn ( The Buffs ). Maj Graves is mentioned several times in Ian Knights ' Fearful Hard Times ; The Siege And Relief Of Eshowe , 1879 ' . I haven't checked but is probably also mentioned in ' Black Soldiers Of The Queen ' by Paul Thompson . 90th
