Kate,

William Charles Nicholls, was a Lieutenant with the Royal Marine Artillery at Eastney when selected for service with the Royal Marine Battalion to be sent out to South Africa for special service in the Zulu War.  He served as Adjutant and Paymaster for the R.M.A. portion of the battalion.
