Hi Kate
Not sure what you mean with Mellish being a Colonial Volunteer , it reads to me Mellish returned to Hanover in 1879 and spent some time there , so it's doubtful he was in the War as there's no mention he was .

Colonial Volunteer? in the title means was he part of any small colonial unit.
He may have been, he may not have been, hence putting him in this section of the forum.
He is clearly a military man, was  in SA at the time and may have served in the early part of the war and then left in April or May.

But bearing in mind how many foreign men were drafted into the Colonial units and how scant our records are of them, I have posted this up in case the name crops up in any future AZW correspondance. The words 'Colonial Volunteer' in the title make it easily searchable.
From a researchers point of view it could be that vital small piece of the jigsaw thats needed to complete the picture.

Kate,

No trace on my now functioning system.

The German Legion - mainly Hanoverians - arrived in South Africa having served in the Crimea. At the conclusion of war many accepted the offer to settle in South Africa. A large number of the German Legion were welcomed at Fort Glamorgan, East London, by Sir George Grey.
