Today is the anniversary of the Cyclone Domoina making landfall in Mozambique in 1983 and the start of the death and destruction that reached much further south. A possible repeat of this event was what recently kept Barry glued to the weather maps.

A wonderful week and after remembering "this is Africa" we managed to achieve most of what we were asked to do - life long memories for my chaps and good to be back amongst friends from both sides and from many years - Frank would you mind if I post a copy of your line up to Ian Knight's Tour group with acknowledgments - our 7000 plus images are being sorted and will be on our face book page when we get round to it - thanks to all my fellow travellers on this one and as always John good to have your full support - atb Tim

A little reminder of the trip.  Some of my gifts from King Zwelithini.

The greatest gift for me was the friendship of the Zulu people from the highest to the lowest in the land.

Tim,

I’ll swap you a shield for your “leopard skin” collar!

Looking forward to the rematch later in the year!

I notice the spear is missing, did 'she who must be obeyed' stick it some where? I did notice she was stroking your back, possibly looking for a tender spot?
I would agreed though, a memorable journey, not least meeting up with so many forum friends.

Frank,

No we were dancing to the strains of “Waltzing Matilda” I believe.

She beat a hasty retreat when “my sister” gave her a right Royal tongue-lashing.

Sorry John the collar is something a bit special isn't it - and a major surprise in a week full of them! The images already out there and the memories made - did you ever see a redcoat walking down Ulundi High Road! A truly humbling experience that will leave lasting imprints on my chaps for the rest of their lives - this was my 6th trip there and each one has a different set of experiences - lets hope I can last till the 7th - and as you say John looking forward to the rematch later this year - atb Tim

Frank,

I am aware that a Zulu War panel is planned for 20th July, also in Brecon, but the exact location and time is to be confirmed.

All other activities are presently in the planning stage, including a service at Brecon Cathedral.

An incredible moment at the Royal Welsh Show, with King’s ibutho chanting, then the voice of Glyn Baker coming over the tannoy asking “Don’t you think the Welsh can’t do better than that?” A male voice choir answered the challenge with “Men of Harlech”.

A half decent round up is here:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Which gives a sort of overview of things from the Sunday (there were other things going on across the weekend at various venues too) - all things considered went almost to plan with the exception of the Zulus taking the Colour which was NOT scripted - my mounted chaps had the presence of mind to ride into them to recover it and then ride off as planned to - not quite what we thought was going to happen but all added to the drama of the day! Enjoy - atb Tim

Taken from my lecture on King Cetshwayo’s confinement and restoration.

Saturday, 19th August 1882 saw the Zulu king and his party, accompanied by Mr. John Bramston, the Assistant Under-Secretary of the Colonial Office, leave Melbury Road for Paddington Station. The group boarded a Great Western Railway train and travelled to Windsor, and another one of Queen Victoria’s homes. They were conducted on a tour of Windsor Castle and the Great Park by Mr. W. Seabrook, the Inspector of Palaces. The visitors paused in St. George’s Chapel until a service concluded, here they were met by the Reverend Frederick Anson, the Canon of St. George’s Chapel who conducted through the precincts of the chapel. Canon Anson paused in front of the memorial of the Prince Imperial of France, who had died in kwaZulu on 1st June 1879, he explained the circumstances of the prince’s death which in turn was translated into isiZulu. It was noted that the king and his party stood in silent contemplation for several minutes.
