Graves1879 / 90th. I dont understand why. See Red High-lighted.

485 Pte J. Brett Conn. Rang

Private John Conway alias John Brett was born in Blackburn, Lancashire and was a labourer by trade. He was serving with 3rd Royal Lancashire Militia prior to enlisting, aged 18, in 47th Foot (Loyal North Lanc. Regt) on 4 October 1871. He reverted to his real name, John Brett, on 17 April 1873 and having been found to belong to the Royal Lancashire Militia his service to 22 September 1876 was
discounted towards good conduct pay. He transferred to Army Reserve on 10 October 1877 until 19 April 1878 when he was recalled for service in 94th Regt. (Connaught Rangers). On 31 July 1878, he transferred to Army Reserve again and then volunteered to rejoin the colours (65th Brigade) on 31 July 1879, serving in South Africa from 7 September 1879 to 14 April 1882, but not being entitled to the South African Medal for Zulu Wars (by a matter of one week). He received his first good conduct pay on 1 April 1880, his second on 21 August 1880 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 27 December 1880. He reverted to Private on 24 May 1882 and on 30 July 1883, his previously forfeited service was permitted to reckon for good conduct pay and pension from date of attestation. On 30 July 1883, he
re-engaged to complete 21 years service, received his third good conduct pay on 1 April 1885, his fourth on 12 April 1889, which was forfeited on 18 December 1881, and his LSGC on 21 August 1890. He was discharged on 10 September 1892. Sold with copies of service papers.

Hi John

To get the Zulu War Medal, you would have to serve in South Africa between the dates of 11TH JANUARY TO 1ST SEPTEMBER, 1879.

So you can see he started on the 7th September 1879, just missing out.
