Arthur Bancroft 99th Duke of Edinburgh's (Lanarkshire) Regiment of Foot

"Ex-Soldier's Funeral. The death took place on Sunday of Mr. Arthur Bancroft, Newtown, at the age of 60 years. Mr. Bancroft served in the Wilts Regiment from 1878 to 1881, and saw service during the Zulu War, from which campaign he was invalided home. He joined the Wilts Regiment at the commencement of the Great War, and was afterwards transferred to tho Royal Defence Corps from which he received his discharge on the cessation of hostilities. Mr. Baucroft leaves a widow and thirteen children. He was buried with military honours on Wednesday a firing party from the Wilts Regiment, Devizes attending"

N/T of a Bancroft in Dutton's

38B/1944 Pte Arthur Bancroft was with a Detachment of the 99th serving on St. Helena. I only have a copy of the May 1879 pay-list for that detachment. They are not listed in any of the Regiment's main lists until 1880 when they returned, dated 14/01/1880.

Looking at the Officer's days at sea it would seem they were there from mid January 1879 so he never served in the Zulu war yet alone invalided back from it.

Hi All,
1881 census Bradford on Avon Arthur is a Mason at Fathers. 1901 and 1911 census Bradford on Avon he is a Stonemason, married to Lucy with 9 children. He died 8 May 1920 and is buried in Bradford on Avon Cemetery, Wiltshire.
