Extract from an article in the Saffron Walden Weekly News - Friday 14 July 1922

"FED SOUTH AFRICAN Gets One Month at Ely Police Court. "Don’t away constable I am going to break into somewhere to-night”
This was the extraordinary request made to an astonished Ely Policeman on Thursady night by a man who said he was a South African and who in the Police Court proceedings which followed on Saturday emphasised that was “fed up” His unusual conduct and statement resulted in one month......
.... the accused in first instance was George Henry William Lewis who had described himself as of Port Natal South Africa he was charged before Messrs W Cutlack (in chair) and H Downie with being on enclosed premises for an unlawful purpose on Thursday night. He pleaded guilty. ...
In a rambling statement the accused remarked that “that was what he got for fighting old England” “I’m fed up: Send me to France or deport me or I’ll do something. I fought in the Zulu War and have eight or nine medals and this is what I get he concluded dramatically"
