| I think there's a typo in the report - "1st Battalion of the 2/24th":
VEALE Joseph P – Private – 25B/1076 – 2nd/24th D Company Service details: Attested 15/1/1877 aged 19 years. Transferred from D to G Company at Rorke’s Drift, Natal, South Africa 31/1/1879. Discharged under AGL92 no date. Honours/awards: South Africa Medal 1877-8-9 with clasp 1877-8-9. Issued 3/8/1881 sent to Royal Hospital Chelsea, London 12/2/1932. Death: South Shields, Co. Durham, England 18/5/1937. Buried South Shields. Footnote: Unconfirmed newspaper report places him on the 22/1/1879 with the force that accompanied Lord Chelmsford. See The Royal Welsh Museum Archives Brecon, Brecknockshire

| Kate Well, it's the right location (S. Shields). I reckon it's more likely he either enlisted under a false forename or the recruiting sergeant recorded it incorrectly. |

| "Faasands of em." His name reminds me of the German chap I knew who was stopped by police with a huge piece of fresh meat in his boot. When asked what it was he replied "It is my spare veal" |
