Good find Kate,

Alfred Henry Martin entered the Royal Navy in 1876.  He did serve as a Stoker aboard HMS Orontes from November 1876 until January 1881 during which in 1879 the body of the Prince Imperial was taken aboard "Orontes" and returned to England for burial.  None of the member of "Orontes" served ashore with the Naval Brigade, but they were awarded the South Africa Medal without clasp.  Martin served in the Royal Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1896 with the rank of Chief Stoker.
