Certainly old enough to have been there.
Looking through army records there is a Private 2676 Charles Hynes, Connaught Rangers who enlisted on the 21st Septemebr 1887 and served in Malta, Cyprus Egypt and India but not the AZW.
There is no Charles Hynes in the AZW medal rolls for the Connaught Rangers (88th or 94th)

Kate,

If the service papers are in order, he would have been nine years of age at the start of the Zulu War.
I think that rather precludes him.

Hi All,
Big doubts on this man. The Charles Hynes who dies in Loughrea Galway 1951 is listed in the Irish deaths as being only 95 and born in 1855. The same man? born in 1855 appears in Galway Petty Sessions constantly every year from 1875 to 1885. So he could not served in the Zulu War?, but who did ?? The Rangers base was Galway, the newspaper report seems genuine, draw your own conclusions.
There seems to be no Military Records??.
Rai Keynshamlighthorse.
