Now here is a mystery to solve
Just who was the 'slim scarlet coated subaltern in the Mounted infantry' and who was the officer in Lonsdales Horse?
Lonsdale's Horse (or he could mean Lonsdale's Mounted Rifles) was formed from the remenants of 3rd NNC after iSandlwana.
However in the article he could be refering to a mounted colonial officer in Lonsdales 3rd NNC

Kate,

I would suggest that the officer from 1st Squadron, Mounted Infantry, was the then Lieutenant Nathaniel Newnham-Davis, 2nd Battn., 3rd (East Kent) Regiment “The Buffs”.

In later life Newnham-Davis was a journalist and food critic, and the cartoon could well be a self-parody as The Dwarf of Blood. Which was his nom-de-plume.

Now to discover the N.N.C. officer.
