Thanks for the welcoming!
It´s terrific that thera are persons that takes time to run forum like this and I take great pleasure reading different subjects.
Since technical stuff and computers are not within my comfort zone ( scratch ) to put it mildly I´m glad that I found this site! Remains to be seen if I can use it properly....
Things would be even better if I could manage to find a similar forum for the English campaigns in Egypt 1882-89 and if anyone could be able to assist me I would be most gratefull!
Daves comment on my surname is spot on by the way (a Swede behind the alias!?).
Cheers

Hello Chelmsfordthescapegoat,
It´s a Samurai warrior and he is supposed to represent 2 things;
- my martial art background
- but most of all my total inability to create an avatar within the allowed size... scratch
By the way, if I was an impertinent person I would have asked a question or two about your avatar but I´m not so I´ll pass on that. Wink

I have a vague memory from my time in England that Chelmsford is a place with loads of army listening advices, is that right?
If that is the case, you don´t work there and managed to listen to the Vatican state instead uf USSR, that would for sure explain your alias... :lol!:

Rundberg. Lord Chelmsford was the man who tryed to blame Col Durnford for the lost of the camp at Isandlwana on the 22nd Jan 1879. This argument was known as Durnford the Scape Goat. But there are some who think, Lord Chelmsford was used as the scapegoat.

I have ordered some books about Victorian conflicts from various websites recently. But if I was to buy THE book about the Zulu wars, which would that be?
Any book that stands out?

Sorry, should have been more specific.
I was thinking down the lines background, people involved ("major league players"), war campaigns and aftermath.
And 90th, I hope you haven´t lost your library at home as well... :lol!:

hi rundberg.
Luckily I havent lost my library :lol!: . Here are some of the books I use often. I certainly reccomend any of the following .
In no particular order of preferance. THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN OF 1879 by MACKINNON and SHADBOLT.
has photographs of all the officers who died in the war , with a summary of their lives. and other facts of the Regt"s that
took part. One of my favourites is THE ZULU WAR THEN AND NOW by IAN KNIGHT , Details of all battles, many photos ,
maps and sketches , taken during or not long after the war , then the modern day photos taken in the same place,
taken during the 1990"s. A good book by LOCK and QUANTRILL is ZULU VICTORY - THE EPIC OF ISANDLWANA AND
THE COVER UP. Another book by IAN KNIGHT is THE COMPANION TO THE ZULU WAR , it covers everything from
ammunition boxes , big game hunting , flogging , snakes etc all the way down to the zulu royal house. The british reporter
CHARLES NORRIS - NEWMAN"S book IN ZULULAND WITH THE BRITISH ARMY OF 1879 is another great book, his description
of the isandlwana battlefield is a little moving. THE RED SOLDIER by FRANK EMERY , consists of letters written home by those
in the war of 1879. Another favourite is THROUGH THE ZULU COUNTRY by BERTRAM MITFORD , his story as he travelled
through zululand in 1882 visiting the battlefields and talking to zulus who took part in the conflict. There are 2 books in the
WHO"S WHO IN THE ZULU WAR by ADRIAN GREAVES and IAN KNIGHT PART 1 THE BRITISH ( I dont have it) or WHO"S
WHO IN THE ZULU WAR THE COLONIALS AND ZULUS , deals with the principle characters involved in the war from those
sides. A good referance work. This is only a handful of books I think that everyone should own or read , I have many others
which are good reading but havent listed, As there his plenty to read in the above list Rolling Eyes

cheers 90th.

If you search the internet by obtaining the books ISBN , then google the number , you will save a fortune.
if you have any questions , you can send me a pm.

Hi 90th
Thanks a lot for your time, much appreciated!! I am also glad to hear that your books are still there Wink
Right, "Companion to the Anglo-Zulu War" it is then. Sounds like it´s about Zulu war in lock, stock and barrel-version which is fine by me.
A tips if you are about to extend your library by the way, use BookFinder.com. They cover nearly every bookseller there is and it´s worth it! When I checked the price for this book it varied from ca £ 20 to ca £ 75!!!
Cheers,
Rundberg

hi rundberg.
Your snail mail is like lightning , It can take 12- 14 weeks for books to arrive in Australia from the U.K by surface mail.
I ordered a book from ABEBOOKS UK on the 1st AUG and still waiting 😕
Airmail is a lot quicker 5 - 7 days . Much more expensive , especially over 2 kg..

After some research in my mailbox I´m "proud" to report that I´m in the lead! I ordered a book from Ian Allan Publishing 090729 that I haven´t recieved yet. Just to ad some icing on the (sour) cake I realised that I have ordered the very same book from another firm as well... Mad
I wouldn´t go as far as to state that illiterates has a better life but it´s for sure a cheaper life....
Cheers,
Rundberg

Rundberg.
This is a very good on-line book.

Thanks Chelmsfordthe scapegoat! (Can I call you something shorter? Wink )
The book reminds me of a "real" book I have about Gustav III (a Swedish king from the second half of the 18th century) written in the form of a diary by his governant since H.M:s childhood. He even wrote daily reports of when the King made "big" or "little" "boo"! :lol!: It´s true, I promise!
But I have a problem with the site where the book is, namely how to save the boo(ks)? (OK, that was a shitty twist...)
Bear in mind that you have never communicated with a smaller brain when it comes to computors....
I save the "string" in the upper corner of the computor in a Word document among my documents named "War Diarys and books" on my comp and hopes that the string eventually leads back to the book... Rolling Eyes
Surely there has to be a better way!?
Regards,
Rundberg
