Lugg's letter was first published in a March 1879 edition of the Bristol Observer. Does anyone know the date?
Its next publication was in April so I reckon it was a late March edition.

Julian,

Not the Bristol Observer but the Bristol Mercury of 5th April 1879 carries the letter under the headline A Young Bristolian at Rorke’s Drift.

Thanks John. Lee and ABJ have it as March and Observer - perhaps in the latest version it's been corrected! Really useful for me.

John, one more favour, was the letter itself dated in the Bristol Mercury or was it left undated?
