Kate,

Note the spelling Gardiner, rather Gardner, so it is obviously referring to Royal Navy officer who became a Christian missionary to the Zulu.

Natal Witness 6th September 1879
Captain Alan Gardner of the 14th Hussars who lately gained the Victoria Cross in South Africa and was invalided home on the account of his wound has arrived in London, and we are glad to find, has nearly recovered.

Natal Witness 23rd September 1879
ALAN GARDINER AND D'ARCY - Captain Alan Gardiner 14th Hussars does not return to Natal. I am glad to say that he is fully recovered to health, and that his services are likely to be fittingly acknowledged, though the Cross is quite out of the question.I fear likewise that D'Arcy of the Frontier Light Horse, will go without the Cross. I sincerely hope that he may get the decoration in so much as it would be a fitting recognition of the gallentry displayed on all occassions by the colonial forces and would remove all idea of favouratism. As Captain D'Arcy from all accounts behaved very nobly and well deserved the Cross why in heavens name is it to be kept from him? - Through the Looking Glass
