1071 SGT A.H. STILL 12th LANCERS

The following information on Arthur Horatio STILL courtesy of his grandson:


Born 21 Jan 1853 St. Lukes, City Road, Middlesex.

Enlisted 02 Nov 1869.

Medical examination at Dublin & appointed to 12th Royal Lancers 12 Nov 1869.

Embarked for South Africa from Dartmouth on the Walmer Castle 31 May 1878 with Major JC Russell (also of the 12th Lancers).

Landed at the Cape of Good Hope 25 Jun 1878.

Entered Natal 02 Aug 1878.

Entered Transvaal 02 Sep 1878, marched from Pretoria to join column under the command of General Sir H. Rowlands VC KCB, took part in first operations against Sekukuni. Marched down country and joined column of General Lord Chelmsford.

Entered Zululand 11 Jan 1879.

Retired to Rorke's Drift after the disaster at Isandlahwana (sic) 23 Jan 1879.

Joined column of General Sir H.E. Wood VC and was present at the action of 'Kambula Hill'.

Present at the action at Ulundi 04 Jul 1879.

Joined the column under the command of Sir B.C. Russell, proceeded to the Intombi and was one of the party to capture the chief of that district.

At Pietermaritzburg Infantry Battalion Depot between 21 Aug & 30 Sep 1879.

Returned to UK 08 Dec 1879.

Married 21 Sep 1880 at Dover.

Re-engaged at Canterbury  to complete service of 21 yrs.

Embarked for India 29 Dec 1881, landed 28 Jan 1882.

Awarded Long Sevice & Good Conduct Medal 1888.

Returned to UK 1891 and discharged from Gosport 31 Dec 1891.

Died at 25a Standard Road, Hounslow 06 Jun 1923, buried New Brentford Cemetery (grave CC 54).

Tim and graves
I can add a little to that for you and for his grandson.  Still was in the 1st squadron IMI and appeared from Dec 1878 to March 1879 along with the rest of that unit in the paylists of the 1/13th WO16 1454 and 80th WO16 1982 to which regiments the IMI was attached.
He is also mentioned briefly on p. 93 of Newnham-Davis's book.  He was a drill sergt. brought out for the specific purpose of knocking the MI's slovenly drill into shape.
He appears in the muster roll and in the description of the exploits of the IMI in my article
January 1990 'No 1 Squadron Imperial Mounted Infantry May 1877 - January
1879' published in the Journal of the Victorian Military Society,
January, Issue 58/59.
This will be re-printed in a volume of Studies in the Zulu War volume.
So, thank you both, I have been trying unsuccessfully to find info on this individual since 1988.  The above paylists give his initials only and the surname is so poorly written and faded it can only just be made out.  What sound researchers you are!
