PostSubject: Private J. Stewart of the 88th   Private J. Stewart of the 88th EmptyMon Dec 28, 2009 4:48 pm

I came across this medal on ebay. The question I have to ask, can any one find this named person on the medal roll. I have had a look for his name & number and can not find either.

South Africa Medal 1877-79 with 1877-8-9 bar and replacement watered silk ribbon.
Awarded to 1188 Private J. Stewart of the 88th (Connaught Rangers) Regiment of Foot.

PostSubject: Re: Private J. Stewart of the 88th   Private J. Stewart of the 88th EmptyMon Dec 28, 2009 6:03 pm

From the seller.

We can't find Stewart on the Foster Roll. Approximately 75 percent recipients on the roll are misplaced due to deaths, desertion or being transferred. Sometimes they appear on another corps or regiments list. Foriegn conscripts were never listed. Charger medals for the Light Brigade are often not listed as they failed to attend roll call or regimental functions where the lists were often compiled!!

Is this true ??

Can someone ask the seller for a photo of the name. I thought his regimental number 1188 would be connected to his regiment.

Hi littlehand

I agree that Forsyth's Medal Roll has many mistakes in it, that does not means it is full of mistakes. The original medal rolls are hard to read most the time but the 88th's roll is very clear as you can see

I have posted were Steward should have appeared from the original roll for you to see.

Hi littlehand

I knew you were going to ask me that question :lol!:

All I can say is that I have a feeling that something is not right. I do not have any evidence to prove it a fake, just a gut feeling. I do believe that more research into this medal is needed before I could pass judgement on it.

I will enter this medal into my database but with a question mark Suspect

It might be worth starting a thread on the medal forum which mons14 is a member, they might have a better idea than I do.
