| Who was the most well respected officer during the Zulu War. Buller seems to have some good write-ups and mentioned a few times but those who served under him. He seemed to have had a lot of time for his men. Then there was Wood, was he not the man who held a service for someone who had been killed, the service being held while the battle was raging around them Hlobane I think. |

| hi John. You hit the nail on the head , Buller ,Wood and to a certain degree Chelmsford all had the support of the Rank and file soldier. Yes, it was Wood who performed a burial service at Hlobane for two of his friends namely, Campbell and Lloyd , this happening while the battle was in full swing . If I recall Walkinshaw his bugler was either ordered or volunteered to go and retrieve the Colonels bible which was still in the saddle bag of Woods horse which was shot from under him earlier , Walkinshaw was awarded a decoration for doing so. Have just consulted " They fell like Stones " by J. YOUNG , and A. WALKINSHAW was awarded the SILVER MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT IN THE FIELD ". cheers 90th. |
