Does anyone know name of the officer, that visited the Battlefield of Isandlwana, Although like the rest he saw the remains of the dead soldiers and the carnage left after the Battle. He was more taken back by the sight of the six Artillery horses that were dead and still strapped in there harnesses. This of all the sights on the Battlefield stuck with him more so than the brave dead soldiers. Any information welcome, also I was wondering if he was a British Soldier or member of the Colonial forces.

Hi 90th

Reminiscences of the Zulu War

Transcribed, edited (by Leonie Twentyman Jones) and published from the original manuscript diary in the University of Cape Town Libraries. Maxwell was an officer with the Natal Native Contingent and described his involvement in the Anglo-Zulu War, including a description of Isandlwana on 21 January after the defeat by the Zulus. University of Cape Town Libraries, varia series, no. 15.

90th as promised.

By Lieutentant J Maxwell N.N.C

There were bodies in all directions, but hardly any dead Zulu. The bodies of the men of the 24th many of them only in short-sleeved shirts, mostly in groups of 10 to 20, were scattered here and there, with the bodies of volunteers distinguished from their uniforms. In one place, I noticed the bodies in large numbers together with the volunteers. What seemed to affect me, though it is strange, was the vision of the six horses the same shaded of grey as English artillery, still with their harnesses where they had been speared, Dead men, horses and oxen, in a moving sight and indescribable almost suffocating stench.

Maxwell is not the source of the quote as "Elizabeth" mentions, it is in fact the war correspondent of The Daily News, Archibald Forbes. His article was reproduced in The Illustrated London News of 12th July 1879.

"I came on a gully with a gun limber jammed on its edge, and the horses, their hides scored with assegai stabs, hanging in their harness down the steep face of the ravine. ...

For details of John Maxwell's jottings see Reminiscences of the Zulu War published by the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1979, edited by Leonie Twentyman Jones."

I mentioned to you some time ago getting access into the Killie Campbell museum site, I think you said you were going to try and do it. If you have managed it and you go to the documents section and search Maxwell you will find a part section of his diary concerning Isandlawana.
Its filed under his fathers papers.
