1879. Robert Montresor Rogers, V.C.

"Served with 44th at siege and fall of Sebastopol and in the China war - severely wounded at the Taku Forts-Victoria Cross. Commanded the regiment throughout the Zulu war-brevets of Lieutenant-Colonel and Colonel. Left the regiment, December, 1882. Held command in turn of a regimental district and a brigade in India. Major-General, retired pay, 1889. Died February 5th, 1895."

"ROGERS, Robert Montresor
Lieutenant. 44th Regiment. *
London Gazetted on 13th August 1861.
Born on 4th September 1834 at Dublin, Ireland.
Died on the 5th February 1895 at Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Memorial on grave at All Saints Churchyard, Maidenhead, Berkshire.
Digest of Citation reads:
Lieutenant Rogers, Private John McDougall, of the same regiment and Lieutenant Lenon, of the 67th Foot Regiment, showed conspicuous gallantry by swimming across the ditches and entering the North Taku Fort, through an embrasure **, during the assault on the fort. They were first of the English established on the walls of the fort. They entered in the order that the names recorded here, each one assisting the other to mount the embrasure.
* Essex Regiment.
** A small opening in the parapet of a fortified building, splayed on the inside.
Additional information:. Major General Rogers was also made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath. (CB). He joined the 44th Regiment in February 1855, serving in the Crimean War, being present at the fall of Sebastopol, for which he received the Medal and Clasp. He served in China in 1860, taking part in the action at Sinho. At the storming of the Taku Forts, he was severely wounded. During the Zulu Wars of 1879, taking part in the actions at Zunyin Nek and Kambulah, whilst in command of the 90th Regiment."

From Mackinnon & Shadbolt .
Commanded the regt throughout the war , including the engagement on the Zunguin Nek , 24th Jan , the battle of Kambula and the battle of Ulundi . ( mentioned in dispatches ; Bt of Lt - Col and Col ).

The officer in the centre row wearing the shako is Major Robert Montresor Rogers V.C., who was awarded his Victoria Cross for the assault on the Taku Forts, China, on 21st August 1860, whilst serving with the 44th (East Essex) Regiment. Behind him in the same order of dress is Lieutenant Aubrey Maurice Maude. Henry Evelyn Wood V.C., who holds his shako in his hand is wearing full dress. Seated next to Wood is Surgeon-Major N. Norris, also in full dress and wearing the black leather cross belt identifying him as the Regimental Surgeon.

Colonel R. M. Rogers served with the 44th Regiment in the Crimea from the 27th Aug. 1855, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, and Turkish Medal). Served also in the China campaign in 1860, including the action of Sinho, and was severely wounded at the storming of the Taku Forts (mentioned in dispatches, promoted Captain unattached, Victoria Cross, and Medal with Clasp): together with Private John McDougall 44 Foot, and Lieut. E. H. Lenon, 67th Foot, he was awarded the VC for distinguished gallantry in swimming the ditches and entering the North Taku Fort (China, 14th August i860) by an embrasure during the assault. They were the first of the English established on the walls of the fort, which they entered in the order in which their names are here recorded, each one being assisted by the others to mount the embrasure." Commanded the Light Infantry throughout the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the engagements at Zungin Nek, Kambula, and Ulundi (twice mentioned in dispatches. Brevets of Lt. Colonel and Colonel, Medal with Clasp.
