John Rouse Merriot Chard (born 21 December 1847 – died 1 November 1897)
in Plymouth, Devon. He joined the Royal Engineers in 1868 at the age of 21 and served in Bermuda and Malta before being sent to South Africa, where as a Lieutenant he commanded the station at Rorkes Drift when it was attacked by the zulus in the zulu war. Imediatley after the battle he was promoted to Captian and then to Brevet Major.
From 1892-96 he commanded the Royal Engineer detatchment at Singapore where he was a Lieutenant Colonel and was made a Colonel in 1897. However he developed cancer of the tounge just before he was about to be posted to Perth, Scotland and died in Somerset.
The Resident Infantry Company (RIC) officers bar at Mount Pleasant Airfield Military Base in the Falkland Islands (UK) is called the "Chard Bar" and features a mural depicting the scene at Rorkes Drift.

Ths star of the film 'Zulu' Stanley baker, owned Chards VC (the man who he portrayed) until his death in 1976.

Joe. Some good posts. But try typing the name of the person you are intending to post information on in the search box bottom of home page. Make sure you tick the box inside. You will find lots of information on some of the chaps you are posting about; it might save you sometime, as I see some of the information you are posting already is on the forum. Idea

A detailed account of Chard's life and in particular his funeral and tributes can be found on the Hatch Beauchamp
website (the village where he is buried) at http://www.weavo.co.uk/hatch/
