WILLAN, Colonel Henry Percy Douglas, 1902; Assistant Inspector of Remounts, Dublin, from 1902; b. 26 Sept. 1848. Entered 4th Hussars, 1867; Captain 1st Dragoon Guards, 1879; Major, 1882; Lieut. -Col. 1892; retired, 1894; served Zulu War, 1879 (medal with clasp). Address: Remount Dept., Dublin. Died 4 Nov. 1912.

"WILLAN, Colonel Henry Percy Douglas, 1902; Assistant Inspector of Remounts, Dublin, from 1902; b. 26 Sept. 1848. Entered 4th Hussars, 1867; Captain 1st Dragoon Guards, 1879; Major, 1882; Lieut. -Col. 1892; retired, 1894; served Zulu War, 1879 (medal with clasp). Address: Remount Dept., Dublin. Died 4 Nov. 1912.

May 1879   The remaining two troops of the left wing, under Captain Douglas Willan, returned to hold the post at Rorke's Drift.  May 1879

July 1879   Lord Chelmsford had been replaced as commander in chief by Sir Garnet Wolseley, who on arrival, claimed Captain Douglas Willan with "A' troop KDG as his personal escort, retaining them for the whole of his time in Zululand, and subsequently as far as Pretoria.

Captain Henry Percy Douglas-Willan, 1st Dragoon Guards:  He commanded a Squadron at Rorke’s Drift, Making frequent raids into Zululand, until the arrival of Sir Garnet Wolseley. Marched to Ulundi with Sir Garnet, his troop forming the personal escort of the General from the time he entered until he quitted Zululand, and afterwards as far as Pretoria. He took part in several expeditions after the King.

1890-1894, Commanding Office, 1st Kings Dragoon Guards

Extract from the London Gazette dated 17/7/1894. 1st Dragoon Guards under Major R C B Laurence to be Lt. Colonel vice Douglas Willan placed on half pay dated 16/6/94

The following is thought to refer to the Victoria College, Jersey, school record.

DOUGLAS-WILLAN

Douglas-Willan, H.P., 827, entrance 2nd term 1863
Henry Percy. Son of J.C. Douglas-Willan. Left 1866. Entered the army (4th HUssars). Transferred to K. Dragoon Guards 1879. Served in Zulu and Boer Wars. Retired 1899. C.B. 1902. Asst. Director of Remounts, Sn. Command 1905. Lived at Andover. Died 1912.

Douglas-Willan, J, 895, entrance 3rd term 1864
John. Son of J. Douglas-Willan, 3 Windsor Crescent. Brother of 827.

Buried: Bampton Parish Churchyard (Exact place of burial unmarked), Bampton, Devon, England"
