| Cheers John
When I Googled his name I did notice a sentence in Wikipedia where it states that when he served in South Africa he was injured in 1887, probably in the later uprising. I wonder if there is any record of this on medical records.

| Eddie,
Had it said 1888, then it could have been linked to the last Zulu Royalist throw of the dice against the British. I have the “Blue Book” for that brief campaign, which does list the casualties, I will consult that and advise you as to the result.
That said I personally believe the Good Doctor to be a fantasist. His article - a copy of which I have - appears to have culled from various contemporary sources.

| Eddie,
I have consulted The Blue Book C. 5522 Further Correspondence Respecting the Affairs of Zululand and Adjacent Territories printed by H.M.S.O. August 1888. The publication covers much of the operations against the uSuthu faction supporting the Zulu Royal House.
Dr. D’Evelyn’s name does not appear in any of the casualty returns as being wounded.
I have also searched the relevant databases of the National Archives of South Africa using a time-frame between 1875 and 1890, all with negative result for the name D’Evelyn.

| Eddie,
I finally found him in the new version of the National Archives of South Africa. Rather than search on D’Evelyn, I chose to search simply on Evelyn.
The first entry relates to becoming a dispensing chemist in 1880.
Subsequent entries relate to service in the Pretoria Carbineers during the Siege of Pretoria during the 1st Boer War, during the course of which he was wounded and hospitalised. There are other entries relating to the purchase of field-glasses for the Pretoria Carbineers.
The London Gazette has a casualty-return amongst the volunteers in the 1st Boer War compiled by Colonel William Bellairs. There is a Trooper C. D’Eveleyn [sic.] shown as being dangerously wounded on 12th February 1881 whilst serving with the Pretoria Carbineers.
I’d like to express my thanks to Lee Stevenson for his assist in putting me on the right path as to D’Evelyn’s movements.

| Hi John, great find.
There have been other Doctors and Nurse profiles on the site recently with no link, perhaps they could also be found through those channels also.
